Traffic Rules In India

Traffic rules are made to ensure safety of commuters on the roads. But sadly, in India, most people are either not aware of quite a number of rules or have a lot of misconception in terms of following the rules. Discussed below are some violations covered under The Motor Vehicle Act that might attract a fine.

Some generic laws (applicable everywhere in India):

  • Getting blocked at a parking lot :  If the exit of your vehicle is blocked by another vehicle parked in front of yours at a parking lot, you can call the cops on the owner/driver of the vehicle who would have to pay a fine for blocking your way.
  • Non-functional horn :  A driver can be slapped with a fine for driving a vehicle with a non-functional horn. Horns are used to warn other commuters on the road and is expected to be functional. The non-compliance of this law attracts a fine.

Over speeding :

Drivers should never exceed the recommended speed guidelines on roads, as doing so will draw the ire of traffic cops. As per a report, 66% of accidents in 2018 were caused due to speeding on Indian roads. The fine charged for speeding varies as per the size of your vehicle, typically ranging between Rs.1000 and Rs.2000.

While driving must consider these tips :

1. Keep to your left if driving on a two-way street or road so that vehicles coming in the opposite direction can pass using the right lane smoothly.

2. If you want to turn left ahead, you must stay on the left side before taking a turn.

3. If you want to turn right ahead, you must be at the centre of the road and then gradually take a broad right turn.

4. When you are coming towards a road intersection, road junction, or pedestrian crossing, you must slow down your vehicle.

5. If being overtaken by a vehicle, you must not increase the speed of your vehicle or, in any way, prevent the vehicle that is attempting to overtake you.

6. Overtaking is prohibited in the following cases:
- If passing would, in any way, be dangerous for other travellers on the road.
- If passing is near a bend, hill, corner, or point, as it may lead to a critical accident without clear sight of the road in front.
- If the driver upfront has not signalled the driver behind.

- When trying to overtake a vehicle that’s already being passed by the third vehicle.

7.For those driving two-wheelers, you and your pillion must wear a helmet.

8.Parking is not permitted on the top of a hill, footpath, and road for pedestrians. The same isn't permitted near traffic lights, a crossing on the road, the entrance of a building, or if it covers a fire hydrant.
