Definition of Service Set Identifier (SSID)

A Service Set Identifier (SSID) is a unique identifier that distinguishes one wireless local area network (WLAN) from another. It functions as the network name for Wi-Fi networks. When a device wants to connect to a Wi-Fi network, it scans the area for SSIDs broadcasted by nearby access points (routers or wireless access points). Once the device finds the desired SSID, it can initiate the connection process.

The SSID Serves Several Purposes:

  1. Network Identification: It helps users identify and select the desired Wi-Fi network from a list of available networks.

  2. Authentication: The SSID, along with other security mechanisms such as passwords or encryption keys, helps to authenticate and authorize devices to join the network.

  3. Network Isolation: Different SSIDs can be used to segregate devices into separate networks, providing additional security and control over network access.

While SSIDs are typically broadcasted by access points to facilitate network discovery, they can also be hidden (not broadcasted). Hidden SSIDs require users to manually enter the network name when connecting, which can provide a layer of obscurity but does not enhance security significantly.

It's important to choose a unique and descriptive SSID to avoid confusion with neighboring networks and to ensure ease of use for network users. Additionally, implementing strong security measures such as encryption (e.g., WPA2 or WPA3) and regularly updating passwords helps to safeguard Wi-Fi networks against unauthorized access.
