The Job of the Azure Monitor Agent

The Azure Monitor Agent (formerly known as the Microsoft Monitoring Agent or MMA) is responsible for collecting and transmitting telemetry data from various sources within an organization's IT environment to Azure Monitor, Microsoft's centralized monitoring and analytics platform.
