How do you Add Borders and Shading to Text or Paragraphs in Microsoft Word?

Add Borders and Shading to Text or Paragraphs in Microsoft Word

To add borders and shading to text or paragraphs in Microsoft Word, follow these steps:

  1. Select Text or Paragraph: First, select the text or paragraphs to which you want to add borders and shading. You can select a single paragraph, multiple paragraphs, or even just a single line of text.

  2. Open Borders and Shading Options: Go to the "Home" tab in the Word ribbon. In the "Paragraph" group, you'll see a button labeled "Borders". Click on the dropdown arrow next to this button to open the borders and shading options menu.

  3. Add Borders:

    • To add borders to the selected text or paragraphs, hover your mouse over the "Borders" option in the dropdown menu. This will display a gallery of preset border styles.
    • Click on a preset border style to apply it to the selected text or paragraphs. You can choose from options such as "All Borders", "Top Border", "Bottom Border", "Left Border", "Right Border", "Outside Borders", "Inside Borders", and more.
    • Alternatively, you can click on "Borders and Shading..." at the bottom of the menu to open the Borders and Shading dialog box, where you can customize the border settings further.
  4. Customize Border Settings (Optional):

    • If you choose to open the Borders and Shading dialog box, you can customize the border settings to your liking.
    • In the Borders and Shading dialog box, you can specify the style, color, width, and placement of borders. You can also choose whether to apply borders to the entire paragraph or just certain sides.
    • Use the preview area to see how your changes will affect the selected text or paragraphs.
  5. Add Shading:

    • To add shading to the selected text or paragraphs, hover your mouse over the "Shading" option in the dropdown menu. This will display a palette of preset shading colors.
    • Click on a shading color to apply it to the background of the selected text or paragraphs.
    • Similar to adding borders, you can also click on "Borders and Shading..." at the bottom of the menu to open the Borders and Shading dialog box and customize the shading settings further.
  6. Apply Borders and Shading:

    • Once you've chosen the desired border style and shading color, click on them to apply them to the selected text or paragraphs.

By following these steps, you can easily add borders and shading to text or paragraphs in Microsoft Word, enhancing the visual appeal and organization of your documents.
