What is a Hyperlink?

Hyperlink

A hyperlink, often simply referred to as a link, is a reference or navigation element in a hypertext document that allows users to navigate from one location to another within the same document or to a different document or resource. Hyperlinks are typically clickable elements, such as text, images, or buttons, that, when activated by a user (usually by clicking or tapping), redirect the user to the linked location.

Here are some key characteristics of hyperlinks:

  1. Clickable: Hyperlinks are interactive elements that users can click or tap on to navigate to another location. They are visually distinguishable from regular text or images, often appearing underlined or in a different color.

  2. Text or Image: Hyperlinks can be represented by text, images, or other media elements. Text hyperlinks are typically displayed as underlined or differently colored text, while image hyperlinks may be indicated by a change in cursor when hovered over.

  3. Destination: A hyperlink specifies the destination or target location to which it directs the user. This destination can be another location within the same document (internal link) or a different document or resource (external link), such as another webpage, file, or website.

  4. URL: Hyperlinks are associated with Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), which specify the address or location of the target resource. When a hyperlink is activated, the web browser or other software uses the URL to retrieve and display the linked content.

  5. Functionality: Hyperlinks can serve various functions, including navigation between different sections of a document, access to related resources or references, redirection to external websites or documents, and interactive actions such as submitting forms or initiating downloads.

Hyperlinks are fundamental to the structure and functionality of hypertext documents, such as web pages, electronic documents, and multimedia presentations. They enable non-linear navigation and facilitate the interconnectedness of content within hypertext systems, allowing users to explore and access information efficiently and seamlessly.
