Top 5 Advantages and Disadvantages of Bacteria!

Top 5 Advantages of Bacteria

Used for Bacterial Decomposition:

  • Bacteria act like lions in decomposition as they play an important role in the degradation of organic matter. The decay process is invalid without bacteria. In the early stages of decomposition, when moisture levels are high, microbes break down animal waste, dead organisms, and plant debris to obtain nutrients. Aerobic bacteria act as chemical decomposers in compost piles. Billions of aerobic bacteria heat up the compost pile and decompose the organic matter.

Helpful in Human Digestion

  • There are some good bacteria in the human body that play an essential role in digestion. These intestinal bacteria form an important component of the microbiota ecosystem consisting of lamina propria, epithelial cells and muscular mucosa. These bacteria provide essential nutrients, aid in cellulose digestion, synthesize vitamin K, and promote angiogenesis and intestinal nerve function. Bacteria like Lactobacillus are used to make healthy foods like cheese and yogurt. These E. coli bacteria are present in the colon, which break down complex carbohydrates into a fermentable form using enzymes such as polysaccharide lyase.

Pest Control of Plants:

  • Pesticides kill pests, insects, rodents, or plants, which negatively affect agricultural land and cause diseases like typhus and malaria. Bacillus thuringiensis is a microorganism insecticide that is used to kill insects. It produces endotoxin during sporulation which has specific toxicity to various insects.

Helps to Keep the Human Body Healthy:

  • Along with infectious bacteria and some healthy bacteria, probiotics help keep our bodies healthy and functioning well. Good bacteria fight harmful bacteria, absorb nutrients and break down our food, which provides energy. Some beneficial, healthy bacteria are: the probiotic bacteria strains Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus.

Helps in Making Antibiotics:

  • Some bacteria are responsible for causing infections in humans and animals, and some antibiotics are used to treat them. Bacteria produce these antibiotics to stop the growth and multiplication of harmful bacteria and kill them. For the first time, the antibiotic was discovered from a genus of bacteria called Streptomyces. This was the "golden age" of antibiotic discovery Penicillin was found by a fungus from 1945-1955 along with chloramphenicol, streptomycin and tetracycline.

Top 5 Disadvantages of Bacteria

Bacteria Cause Food Poisoning:

  • The presence of bacteria in food causes food poisoning such as Salmonella enteritis, Clostridium botulinum and Staphylococcus aureus. Food poisoning can cause a person to experience nausea, stomach discomfort, vomiting, and even death.

Denitrification:

  • Most bacteria convert nitrogen compounds into free nitrogen, known as denitrifying bacteria, and the process is called denitrification.

Bacteria Can Cause Sexually Transmitted Infections:

  • The World Health Organization(WHO) states that more than 30 types of parasites, bacteria and viruses can be transmitted through sexual contact, causing various sexually transmitted infections. Syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea are the three most common bacterial-based STIs treated with antibiotics. Symptoms of bacterial STIs include burning during urination, bleeding between periods, abnormal penile or vaginal discharge, sores around the mouth, anus, or genitals, painful bowel movements, and rectal discharge or bleeding.

Humans and Animals Suffer from Various Bacterial Infections:

  • Certain bacteria, external or internal, present in the human or animal body can cause infection. Here are some bacterial infections in the body and their symptoms: ear infection, sinusitis, whooping cough, strep throat, UTI, bacterial meningitis, BV, tetanus, salmonella, pneumonia etc.

Used for Bioware/Bioterrorism:

  • Some infectious bacteria act as biological weapons used in bioterrorism as sufficient weaponizing agents. Bacillusanthracis, an antibiotic-resistant microorganism, is mass-produced for Bioware. These bacteria are released into strategic locations where they cause acute infections of anthrax and plague.
