What is Wide Area Network (WAN)?


Wide Area Network (WAN)

A WAN (Wide Area Network) is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographical area for the primary purpose of computer networking. WANs are used to connect multiple smaller networks, such as local area networks (LANs) or metro area networks (MANs), so that computers and users in one location can communicate with computers and users in other locations.

 

 

Key Characteristics of WANs:

  1. Geographical Coverage:

    • WANs can cover large distances, spanning cities, countries, or even continents.
  2. Ownership:

    • Typically owned and operated by multiple telecommunications providers. Unlike LANs, which are usually managed by the organization using the network, WANs often involve leased lines and third-party management.
  3. Connectivity:

    • WANs connect multiple smaller networks using various technologies, including leased lines, satellite links, and public internet infrastructure.
  4. Technology:

    • Common WAN technologies include MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), Frame Relay, ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), and VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) over the internet.
  5. Speed:

    • WANs generally have lower speeds compared to LANs due to the larger distances and the complexity of the connections involved. However, advancements in technology are continually improving WAN speeds.
  6. Protocols:

    • WANs use a variety of protocols to ensure proper data transmission and communication, such as TCP/IP, MPLS, and various data link protocols like HDLC, PPP, and Frame Relay.
  7. Applications:

    • Common applications of WANs include connecting branch offices to a central corporate network, providing access to internet services, and supporting communication between different geographical locations for organizations, governments, and businesses.

 

Examples of WAN Usage:

  • Corporate Networks:

    • Businesses use WANs to connect their offices in different cities or countries, enabling data sharing and communication across large distances.
  • Educational Institutions:

    • Universities with campuses in different locations use WANs to connect these campuses, allowing them to share resources and access centralized databases.
  • Internet:

    • The internet itself is the largest WAN, interconnecting millions of smaller networks worldwide.
  • Government Networks:

    • Governments use WANs to connect their various departments and agencies spread across different regions.
