Who Developed GPS?

Developed GPS

GPS, the Global Positioning System, was developed by the United States Department of Defense (DoD). The development of GPS began in the 1960s and was initially intended for military use. It was officially launched and declared fully operational by the United States government in 1995.

  • The concept of satellite-based navigation systems like GPS was initially proposed by scientists and engineers such as Ivan Getting, Roger Easton, and Bradford Parkinson. These individuals played significant roles in the early development and implementation of GPS.
  • Bradford Parkinson is often considered the "father of GPS" for his leadership in the development and deployment of the system. He led the team that developed the first prototype GPS satellites and served as the program manager for the development of the operational GPS system.

Over time, GPS has evolved from a military system to a widely used global navigation and positioning system, with applications in civilian sectors such as transportation, agriculture, surveying, and recreational activities. Today, GPS is maintained by the United States Space Force and is freely accessible to users worldwide.
